This one day beginner/intermediate indigo-dyeing workshop will provide participants with a general overview of indigo history, chemistry and dyeing methods. Using a simple reduction formula, we will build an indigo vat together, and use various hand sewing techniques to create a ready to display artwork with a Japanese mokume pattern.
INSTRUCTOR: Danny Ross from IOTA Studio, $125
PROJECT: Participants will use traditional Shibori sewing techniques to create a ready to hang artwork or intricately patterned indigo fabric for your next textile project. Participants will have an opportunity to learn and practice a variety of Japanese mokume shibori techniques before completing their final projects.
Finished item: 35cm x 90cm Japanese cotton wall-hanging
DISCUSSION: We will discuss alternate forms of vat and dye preparation, additional techniques and best practices for dyeing at home. We will explore intermediate techniques to control colour saturation and minimize errors and imperfections in dyeing.
INCLUDED: All materials and supplies are included.
PREREQUISITE: This class is suitable for beginner or intermediate indigo-dyers. While no sewing knowledge is necessary, participants will utilize hand-sewing and simple knotting techniques to create their final projects. Moderate hand dexterity is required.
PLEASE BRING: A bagged lunch or snacks. You may choose to bring your own hand-sewing needles, though needles will also be provided.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Due to very small class sizes, we are unable to offer refunds on workshops. If for any reason you are unable to attend, you can send someone in your place. Any classes cancelled by us due to low registration or health mandates will have the option for a refund or transfer to a future date.
