Fern’s School of Craft Origin Story

Fern began selling her hand woven items at the Royal Bison Art & Craft Fair in 2012. It was there that year after year people would ask her if she taught weaving classes. After many years of dreaming and planning, Fern’s School of Craft offered it’s first weekend of workshops in 2017: a rug hooking class followed by a weaving class the next day. Since then the school has grown to include nearly a dozen of Alberta’s best and most dedicated textile makers.

Fern herself has been making textiles for nearly two decades.  It started with crocheting and knitting in high school and has culminated in completing the Master Weaver Level 2 at Olds College in 2018.   Her study has included a home stay in Peru, Olds College Master Weaver Program, Alberta University for the Arts, and the Edmonton Weavers Guild.

In addition to the Royal Bison, collaborations with an Edmonton based garment designer brought Fern's weaving to the runway at Toronto Fashion week in 2014 & 2015! That is not her pictured left, actual Fern is a sturdy 5’1”.

Fern currently volunteers assistant teaching weaving at Strathcona Place Seniors Centre, and has recently volunteered at Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts, and iHuman Youth Society.
