October 18 - Reclaimed Textile Coiled Basket
October 18 - Reclaimed Textile Coiled Basket
Instructor: Tania of TK Studio
10am - 4pm
Explore the meditative art of coiled basketry using reclaimed textiles to create a one of a kind vessel. This 6 hour workshop is perfect for beginners looking to learn foundational coiling techniques, while also offering more experienced makers an opportunity to dive deeper into shape, texture and creative expression.
PROJECT: Using reclaimed cotton and synthetic textiles plus a variety of threads and yarns in your chosen colour palette, you will create a small basket beginning with a 2 - 2 1/4 inch base that grows and evolves from your intuitive choices.
What you will explore:
- How to start a coiled basket with the ‘knot’ start and different options for finishing your basket with confidence.
- How to manipulate the fabric to create shape and texture.
- How to use the random stitch mindfully to achieve visual interest, texture and stability.
- Tips on changing threads, adding fabrics and embellishments.
- How different textiles and threads behave in coiled basketry and how to prepare them — what to embrace and what to avoid.
- A brief history of coiled baskets.
- The practical and sculptural potential of coiled basketry.
By the end of the workshop, you will have a strong understanding of textile coiled basketry and a growing sense of what’s possible with just some reclaimed fabrics and a bit of thread.
