NOTE: If you are coming from out of town, you could skip the last Thursday session. You will have to either braid your fringes or purchase a fringe twister to finish your rug at home.
Join us for a rag rug weaving session! Participants bring in their own fabric to be woven into rugs using our four shaft floor looms. The first night will be spent cutting the fabric into strips for weaving. Looms will be set up with a neutral coloured cotton warp and ready for weaving.
INSTRUCTOR: Fern Facette
PROJECT: Students weave a rag rug that is approximately 22 x 36”. The first evening will be spent preparing your fabric by cutting into one inch strips. The following two classes will be spent weaving the fabric into a rug, using looms set up with a cotton warp.
DISCUSSION: Types of shuttles for rag rug weaving, efficient ways to cut fabric into strips, weaving on a floor loom. Manipulating warp and weft to vary design elements of the rug. Finishing techniques including weft protecting knots and fringe securing.
WHAT TO BRING: All materials included, with the exception of fabric for the weft rags. Students are required to bring in approximately 40 square feet (4500 square inches) of fabric. It is best to bring in two different fabrics that are similar in weight, content and cohesive in colour palette. Soft fabric will pack in better than a stiff fabric. As the warp is cotton, it is best to use cotton or a synthetic similar to cotton sheets. If you wish to use garments (jeans, or skirts) please bring to class with all seams already ripped. If bringing sheets, flat sheets are easier to cut than fitted sheets. Short pieces of fabric will be much more challenging to work with, so try to bring in larger pieces of fabric.
NOT SURE HOW MUCH FIBRE TO BRING?: In inches, measure the length and width of your fabric and multiply to calculate total square inches. Then divide by 144 to convert to total square feet. A twin sized flat sheet is approximately 6336 square inches or 44 square feet.
PREREQUISITE: This is a beginner class, no experience necessary.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Due to very small class sizes, we are unable to offer refunds on workshops. If for any reason you are unable to attend, you can send someone in your place.
