Our Learn to Knit class starts with foundational skills that will prepare you to successfully knit your first project. This three series class teaches how to start your knitted work (cast on), how to work a knit and a purl stitch and to bind off.

INSTRUCTOR: Susan of Knit Frog Repeat. $110, yarn for scarf not included.

NOTE: Registration Fee does not include the cost of yarn for the scarf project.  Yarn kits range from $65 - 90.

PROJECT: In the first and second session, we will start with practice yarn to work through each of the techniques: a basic cast-on, knit and purl stitch, and a basic bind-off. Before the end of the second session, we will cast on and knit either a plain, garter stitch scarf or a 1x1 ribbed scarf. Students can choose which of the two stitching textures they would like to knit and whether they would like to knit the scarf in one colour or a three-colour striped version. Scarves are a great way to practice foundational skills in knitting. Once finished, these accessories are a lovely addition to any wardrobe.

CLASS STRUCTURE: three sessions over three weeks, 2.5 hrs/session. First session: using practice yarn learn a basic cast-on, the knit stitch and how to read and follow a written pattern. Homework: continue practicing the knit stitch. Second session: troubleshoot issues; learn a basic bind-off; cast on a second sampler to continue practicing the knit stitch; learn how to knit the purl stitch; additional abbreviations in a written knitting pattern; what a knitted fabric gauge is and how gauge functions when knitting to replicate a pattern. Cast on the scarf you have chosen to knit (either in a plain garter stitch or the 1x1 rib) and how to join new yarn. Homework: continue with your scarf project. Third session: troubleshoot issues; review how to bind off; and finishing steps that include weave in ends, washing the project according to the yarn’s recommended instructions.

DISCUSSION: the difference between a knit and purl stitch and how the stitches present in the fabric. The way tension, the type of yarn knitted into a fabric, and sequence of stitching, will result in a different fabric construction, feel and drape.
